Dan Silver is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Toronto at Scarborough. Professor Silver’s research in urban sociology concerns the cultural life of cities. He investigates how clusters of urban amenities define the "scenescape" in cities and neighborhoods. His current funded research project will map the entire Canadian “scenescape” at the local level and assess how variation in scenes are associated with variations in economic growth, residential patterns, and political attitudes and affiliations. Related work investigates the politics of scenes, exploring how actors in Toronto and Chicago have influenced cultural policy in order to protect and expand local scenes.
