The Department of Sociology at UTM would like to cordially invite you to our first Speaker Series event of the academic year. This month, the Department is hosting Dr. Michelle Maroto, Professor of Sociology Department of Sociology at the University of Alberta and Co-Director for the Transforming Research for Social Impact (TRSI) Hub.

Dr. Maroto will be providing a talk on social class in diverse 21st-century post-industrial societies like Canada. What does social class mean today, and can it be reconstructed to account for the realities of inequality?

Through survey and interview data, Dr. Maroto explores how economic, cultural, and social capital shape people’s perceptions of class standing and political ideologies, revealing how growing economic insecurity across the class spectrum complicates our understanding of social class.
