Description
Please join Lacey Bobier and Jessica Fields this Friday, November 3, 2023, for an upcoming talk titled "Dealing with Dress Codes: Girls' Bodies as Sites of Risk and Distraction," which is based on Bobier's dissertation. Lacey began her postdoc at the University of Toronto (Scarborough) this fall, having recently completed her PhD at the University of Michigan.
Abstract: School dress codes create an omnipresent threat of assessment that teaches girls about the deficiencies and dangers of their newly developed bodies. This talk will explore how middle school girls navigate dress codes by contending with the frameworks that underlie such policies: the gendered logic of distractions and corresponding rhetoric of risk and care.
