Congratulations to PhD candidates Alexa Carson and Jillian Sunderland, joint winners of the Outstanding Sociology Teaching Assistant Award for 2023-24. The award recognizes the work of graduate student teaching assistants and celebrates their contributions to undergraduate student learning. The Department of Sociology recognizes TA excellence not only in imparting knowledge, but also in cultivating the sociological imagination of undergraduate students, allowing them to understand and analyze the world around them in a meaningful and critical way. Alexa Carson is a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology and a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Doctoral Fellow. Her dissertation is titled “Looking after los abuelos: How Latin American and Caribbean Immigrant Families Make Sense of Senior Care”.
Jillian Sunderland is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Sociology and a SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier Doctoral Scholar. Her doctoral dissertation is titled “From Crisis to Recovery: The Role of Gender Violence and State Power in Reshaping RCMP Legitimacy”.
