June 17, 2025 by Jeremy Nichols

The Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto is pleased to announce that Jessica Stallone, a graduate student in the department, has been selected as a recipient of the 2025 Student Merit Award by the Canadian Sociological Association (CSA).

This award is part of a pilot program introduced by the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS) in partnership with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The initiative supports the participation of exceptional graduate students in the annual Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, recognizing their contributions to scholarly dialogue and community engagement.

Jessica is one of five students endorsed by the CSA to receive this merit-based award. The selection process emphasizes academic excellence, as well as a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Awardees are recognized not only for their research and presentations but also for their broader contributions to the Congress experience through collegial interaction and intellectual exchange.

Jessica’s doctoral research, titled “The Politics of Nation-Making: An Ethnographic Study of Québécois Seniors in Old-Age Homes in Québec,” is supervised by Professors Anna Korteweg and  Fidan Elcioglu, with committee members Jennifer Adese and Ellen Berrey.

Congratulations to Jessica on this well-deserved recognition!
