Professors Yvonne Sherwood and Neda Maghbouleh were both recently elected to subcommittee positions in the Canadian Sociological Association (CSA), with terms beginning on June 10th, 2021. Professor Yvonne Sherwood will be a member of the Decolonization Subcommittee and Professor Neda Maghbouleh will be a member of the Research Advisory Subcommittee.
The Decolonization Subcommittee seeks to bring to light recent issues of reconciliation, decolonization, and settler colonialism. It aims to increase awareness of these issues in the CSA community by providing relevant resources, incorporating reconciliation initiatives in conferences, and organizing informative sessions for its members. Professor Yvonne Sherwood is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Toronto, Mississauga. She has also served as a co-researcher with the Center of World Indigenous Studies (CWIS) on the Radiation Risk Assessment Action Project. Her research focuses on the politics of knowledge, race, and law with a focus on the interplay of settler colonialism, white supremacy, and heteropatriarchy.
The Research Advisory Subcommittee seeks to inform the Executive Committee of arising issues regarding social science research, providing suggestions for potential courses of action, and organizing research methods sessions at the Conference. Professor Neda Maghbouleh is the Canada Research Chair in Migration, Race, and Identity and an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Toronto, Mississauga. She is also cross-appointed to the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at the St. George campus. Her research focuses on the racialization of migrants from the MENA region.
