Welcome to Assistant Professor Jan Doering!

October 5, 2023 by Juanita Lam

We welcome Assistant Professor Jan Doering to the St. George Department of Sociology. Before joining us, he was Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at McGill University. Professor Doering studies how people experience processes of urban change and how this shapes their politics and behaviour. For example, his 2020 book Us versus Them examines how residents of multiracial Chicago neighbourhoods clash over issues of crime, gentrification, and race. His new research in this area investigates how individuals perceive and adjust to urban density. Additionally, Professor Doering is currently working on a project exploring how people experience, contest, and adjust to discrimination.

Professor Doering’s research has appeared in Sociological Science, Social Problems, Urban Affairs Review, Ethnic and Racial Studies, and other journals. His work has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and Les Fonds de recherche du Québec.
